Last show of 2020 is an all vinyl LP tracks comfort show, pulled as if on auto-pilot to showcase some records I love that have undiscovered joys. The show starts right off at peak with Tommy Jay. The 4 song quartet of Danny Graham, Joe Ghatt, Torgeir Waldemar and Irmão Victor capture exactly what I want to say with this show. In the second hour the pair of tracks by Jordan Jones and No Direction carry the torch. BMX Banditos and Velvet Crush close out the 2 hours tying it all together nicely.

All vinyl rock show. Helen Love sing “We love the way you dance in your plastic pants, like a New York Doll” right before the Johnny Thunders track from the just released Live From Zürich 1985 that starts the second hour. A few Black Friday RSD releases included (Jesus People Music, Luther Dickinson, Blue Öyster Cult, The Bangles, Geraint Watkins & The Dominators, Masters Of Reality, Lou Reed). The Lurkers track London Jeepster has been going through my head, despite its nonsense topic (what the hext is a London jeepster?). The Auteurs track is pretty nifty as well.

A rock show that should prove most pleasing. The RSD on August 29 saw the rerelease of the Cleveland Confidential compilation. We will get to that in a few weeks, but this show starts off with two Cleveland area bands, BPA and Qi-ZZ. Immediately following, two of my favorites, Naked Prey and Nymphs (Inger Lorre). The Flamin’ Groovies do a 1974 track that foreshadows their signature Shake Some Action track, then another personal fave band Leaving Trains, followed by the Sid & Nancy story chronicled by fellow NYC artist Philip Rambow. A Dan Stuart (Green On Red) track that is not on any of his records, a song by the recently departed Walter Lure (Waldos) and three jewels (Tommy Hoehn, Ned Doheny and Mats Wawa) and you have one heck of a show.

What is this show? Maybe better to ask what it isn’t… Starts off consistent with soul funk boogie during the first hour, but in the second hour starts to mutate through beat tracks, 60s Mod, balearic, then ambient to take you on a full trip whose concept was solidified from the first track of hour one. I would direct you to be sure to hear the D-Day and Al Tone tracks. Having listened to this finished show twice, if you want to hear how good an ambient track can be, play the Jonny Nash, Suzanne Kraft track!

LP tracks show of what I am calling fuzzy/fringe. That is, what stated as a punk show, upon closer examination, became a melange of bands slightly outside the typical boundaries of that sound. They had a fuzzy connection to punk, and were all fringe members of the punk community. So there you go, fuzzy/fringe. Many tracks I loved so much listening to over and over as I prepared this. I will especially draw attention to Eddie Criss Group, with their track that reminded me of ‘The In Crowd’ as interpreted by Bryan Ferry, SF’s House Of Pants, Richmond VA’s Prevaricators from their critically despised second LP, and to cover star Bill Case, who proves that you don’t have to look effeminate to be glam!

LP tracks show of a rock sub-genre I am calling ‘coasting’ – that is, tracks where the artist lets space permeate the track a little more than usual, giving them a smooth groove feel. One of the things I learned this show was that many of the tracks that follow this model end in a fade out. I think there are many great tracks you will want to hear, though I will especially call out the Ray Alexander Technique track in the second hour. Looking through the cuts, I have to say there is nothing here I would NOT steer you to if you were sitting in the room with me.
