#702 – The 2000s Pt1

November 25, 2025

The first show in a new 8 week Gulls Window Circus series ‘The 2000s’. At the end of the 90s the guitar took a backseat to electronics, and influences from jazz, house, hiphop, dub and techno entered into popular music. We will look back at this time with a 2026 perspective and re-discover some really interesting music, as well as broaden our tastes in this once-again rock dominated underground world.

A Gulls Window Circus rock show that completes the recent run of CD rock shows before starting a new 8 week series ‘The 2000s’ next week. Aside from carefully chosen tracks by artists/bands we know, I dug out a few very under-the-radar discs by Gutterboy , ESS, Hellpop, and Johnny Barnes. They are fun to hear, but the main tracks are where the gold lies. The Ramones covering The Animals, Pale Man Made from Newcastle, Überhund from California, and a lot of others including among others Tin Machine, Harlan T. Bobo, The Rosslyns, Torn Sail, and The Stroppies.

A Gulls Window Circus rock show that starts off in a pop melodic mode, then has a brief foray into Downtown art scene rock, before settling on punky stuff that keeps the melodies strong even as the loudness goes up. Special attention to the Angel Corpus Christi cover of Theme From Taxi Driver, Robert Gordon’s Eddie Cochran cover, Chris Stamey’s Beach Boys cover, Jeff Dahl’s Dead Boys cover (and Dead Boys themselves with the Cheetah Chrome mix of Big City), The Damned’s version of Help, Eddie And The Hot Rods with MC5’s Rob Tyner as lead vocalist, Peter Bagge’s band Can You Imagine?, Defunkt’s track In The Good Times, and the Dictators/BOC-related band David Roter Method.

A CD rock Gulls Window Circus show that further (yes, Further is played) digs out stuff I only have access to on CD. Aside from me loving all the tracks here, I want to draw attention to Richie Parson’s recent Eater cover, Uberhund, who take the art of the whammy bar to new levels, The Nettelles that have two members of the 80s band Sally Skull, 45 Grave, who I have recently been enjoying in conjunction with my re-discovery of TSOL, Good Rats, a 70s band from my native Long Island that I knew about but never heard till recently, ESG from their 2002 reunion CD that sounds great today, Benett that used to front Charles Brown Superstar, and Mats Wawa, a contemporary Norwegian band that I love all releases of, and hope their new digital-only album gets a physical release.
