The start of a 4 week Gulls Window Circus series with the self-describing name ‘reggae’. All tracks are being played on vinyl, spun on a real turntable in real time. Lots of Soul Jazz compilations, some classic Bob Marley, a few Emotional Rescue 7″s, and a dub of a Sheila Rickards track. The song that keeps running though my head is the first song in the second hour, Ken Boothe ‘When I Fall In Love’ – like a reggae Johnny Mathis. Blundetto & Grand Magneto’s version of a song popularized by Nilsson ‘Everybody’s Talkin’ also keeps sticking – outside of that, every track should please. Be sure to check Zoot Simms ‘African Challenge’ and The Stingers ‘Rasta Don’t Stop No One’.

Carl’s living room series brings a bunch of treats. Karate is going on tour soon to support their Numero Group reissues, so this show belongs to them, but I do want to draw your attention to John Du Cann, who has had recent reissues by the label Just Add Water, and Flying Norwegians, who have 2 LPs that have recently been reissued. The first ever Everything But The Girl single, a cover of the Cole Porter track ‘Night And Day’ has a RSD reissue, as did the 2nd Kid Creole And The Coconuts LP. Muffs fans have much to love in the vinyl release of ‘New Improved Kim Shattuck Demos’, and Alan Vega fans have Real Gone Music’s reissue of the ‘Saturn Drive’ LP. A lot of great stuff I’m not mentioning…

Carl’s living room (vinyl LP tracks played in real time on a turntable) returns to rock and gives a bunch – all songs are paired and announced after 2 songs. Some of my favorite pairings today are ALRN and KRGA, and Mink Deville and Chick Prophet. But no track made it into the show by sneaking in – all shine bright and any one could be your new fave.

Carl’s living room series goes way back to late 60s/early 70s with maybe a few other times thrown in as the spirit moved me (Hamburger All-Stars, Brian Wilson, and Linda McCartney come to mind in that regard). Was glad to see in issue 128 of Shindig (with Blondie on the cover) they called out Dana Gillespie ‘Dead’ as what is hot on their turntable. This show was recorded before that tip. If any of you read Andrew Vachss he frequently mentioned Judy Henske, and the nytimes even mentioned that when she passed away not too long ago.
