Today is the final show of the eight week Gulls Window Circus series ‘The 2000s’. It has more of a rock sound than others shows in the series, but still has the characteristics found in post-2000s sounds, such as influences drawn from almost any genre, liberal use of instruments beyond the guitar/bass/drum profile, and freedom to follow wherever their sound goes, not worrying about fitting in with the popular sounds of the day.

The second to last week of the 8 week Gulls Window Circus ‘The 2000s’ series fully concentrates on what was partially introduced last week: the re-alignment of rock to incorporate the post-2000s tools and sounds. Now firmly in a post-genre world, rock is free to incorporate anything its creators choose into its palette of sounds. While the results may sound quite normal in 2026, at the time these records were released, most were revelatory. Now they just sound right and good.

The 6th week in the eight week Gulls Window Circus ‘The 2000s’ series looks at the redefined rock toolset that the full acceptance of electronics brought to bands. The freedom of a post-genre landscape allows all sorts of other influences to enter. For instance, a Tarwater track in the second hour samples the guitar intro to Alice Cooper Billion Dollar Babies, and Peaches And Gonzales channel the B-52s. Dave Clarke plays with a rock re-edit as he puts his spin on a Super Furry Animals track, while the typically Latin-touched Fila Brazillia and The Funky Lowlives add Motorik, dub and beat stylings.

Week four of the 8 week ‘The 2000s’ series on Gulls Window Circus includes some electro house, electronic hip-hop and Grime to soak in with new examples of the sounds established in preceding weeks. Special tip to check out the relative unknowns DJ T., Dwight Trible & The Life Force Trio, Fetish 69, Andy Ditzler, Karl Denson, Xploding Plastix, Blanketship and Central City, all of whom can be held up favorably against the big names in this show: Dizzee Rascal, Offer Nissim, Squarepusher, Señor Coconut, Benga, Benny Benassi, Dave Clarke, Paul van Dyk and Carl Craig. Week 4 of the 8 week ‘The 2000s’ series on Gulls Window Circus balances complete unknowns like TTC, Vacuous Ninnies, Vacuous Ninnies, and Win Win, with biggies like Armand Van Helden, Plump DJs, Amon Tobin, Rinôçérôse, Roni Size, Röyksopp, and His Name Is Alive, with names you probably know if were were a 2000s deep diver in the day, such as Iven Schmidt, Mathias Schaffhäuser, Tobias Schmidt, Claude VonStroke, Repeat Orchestra, Runaways UK, Le Tone, and Cut Copy. The sounds of these 3 types of artists are woven into one cohesive show that should make you smile and wiggle around.

The third week in The 2000s series on Gulls Window Circus has 23 tracks from three years before or after 2000 so the focus is tight, and the sound stays in a clearly not-rock space. A member of the (rock) band Hood is here glitchily as Downpour. All the tracks do what they do quite well, hope you have a chance to listen to them all.

Today is second show in the Gulls Window Circus ‘The 2000s’ series. The many different sounds of that new era show themselves today, along with new example of the influence, on display with the just released Violet Nox track ‘Wanderlust’ from the album Silvae. Electric Company (Brad Laner of Medicine) is a great example of rock moving to other territories, as this series focuses on. Re-evaluating the 2000s artists with today’s perspective shows that many records that slipped past us when they were released sound current today, and in fact are prime candidates to add to your brain catalog of music.

The first show in a new 8 week Gulls Window Circus series ‘The 2000s’. At the end of the 90s the guitar took a backseat to electronics, and influences from jazz, house, hiphop, dub and techno entered into popular music. We will look back at this time with a 2026 perspective and re-discover some really interesting music, as well as broaden our tastes in this once-again rock dominated underground world.
