The ninth and final show in the Gulls Window Circus 7″ series covers singles ‘outside of rock’. That is an open-ended descriptor for records that may have rock elements, but live more comfortably in other genres. For example, we have Holger Czukay (Can) in a 2011 7″ as Bison, a balearic act (as is Torn Sail). The Babalooneys would be most appropriately filed under ‘surf’. Arab Strap have been a rock duo positively, but their current sound pushes beyond. Marcel Bontempi is a contemporary artist with an identifiable 50s sound, in today’s show doing a cover of The Sonics. Dengue Dengue Dengue are a Peruvian duo, today doing a cover of a track from Giuliano Sorgini’s ‘Africa Oscura’ LP. That is just a handful – every track deserves a plug, and if I wrote this again, I may have highlighted an entirely different few of the records.

The eighth of nine all 7″ singles shows on Gulls Window Circus. Oddities include: The Vanitys, which is a one-off precursor to the duo Science Fiction. Tony, an English band that only released one 7″ in 1996. They get the award for least-findable on the internet… The Tights had the catchy track ‘Howard Hughes’, but we will hear the much different sounding B-side. Other great singles here are from To Damascus, Those Naughty Lumps, Überhund, Vinyl Devotion, Would-Be-Goods, XXX, and The Yardleys. Several releases from the singles clubs we have covered in earlier shows round out another strong show in this series.

Today’s Gulls Window Circus is an art rock mostly LP tracks show, with three 12″ (Imago, Fernando, and Holger Hiller). Marina Herlop, OMD, and Fernando are current artists with new releases, the rest are from 70s/80s. Julia Heyward/T-Venus and Strange Party are Downtown 82 NYC joys, Imago does an amazing Beatles cover of Tomorrow Never Knows.
