The second week of ‘outside of rock’ (electronic) on Gulls Window Circus. After enjoying last week’s sounds, the tracks in this show came to mind and they configured themselves almost on their own. Some of the artists are quite new [Liminal, Vermelho Wonder, Jura Soundsystem, Harri Pierson], Obscure Desire are not new but are re-discovered on a label I love, and some are 10 years or older and just plain worth surfacing again [Jonny Teardrop, Lnrdcroy, Rouge Mécanique, Linkwood, 6th Borough Project, Matmos, Squarepusher, Mushrooms Project].

An ‘outside of rock’ (electronic) Gulls Window Circus show that seeks to penetrate your mind as you absorb subtle shifts in these (sometimes) long tracks. I find myself listening tracks like Theo Parrish or Brian Eno, Holger Czukay, J. Peter Schwalm thinking it is just repetition, than realizing I am in a different place than I started and am bopping to the track. Many of the tracks are not so subtle or profound – they are just solid tracks that work together to propel you to a semi-relaxed mode. I know this sounds like a bunch of contradictions, but give me your trust and sail beside me for these 2 hours.

The ninth and final show in the Gulls Window Circus 7″ series covers singles ‘outside of rock’. That is an open-ended descriptor for records that may have rock elements, but live more comfortably in other genres. For example, we have Holger Czukay (Can) in a 2011 7″ as Bison, a balearic act (as is Torn Sail). The Babalooneys would be most appropriately filed under ‘surf’. Arab Strap have been a rock duo positively, but their current sound pushes beyond. Marcel Bontempi is a contemporary artist with an identifiable 50s sound, in today’s show doing a cover of The Sonics. Dengue Dengue Dengue are a Peruvian duo, today doing a cover of a track from Giuliano Sorgini’s ‘Africa Oscura’ LP. That is just a handful – every track deserves a plug, and if I wrote this again, I may have highlighted an entirely different few of the records.

A non-rock Gulls Window Circus show that features five recent 12″s [Mudd, Judy And Lynda, Marshall Watson & Cole Odin, Casinoboy, Kaoru Inoue], compilations [Machagistia, Fantastic Voyage, Milagros Del Ritmo II, Extra Muros : Czech Republic, Do You Have The Force? Vol 2, Cosmic Disco Machine Volume Eight, Virtual Dreams II], soundtracks [Three O’Clock High], album reissues [Fridge, Travis Biggs] and new LPs [OMD]. The second hour closes with a track from an LP I doubt you will hear anywhere else: Lou Reed’s ‘Hudson River Wind Meditations’. The record is as divisive as Metal Machine Music was, playing as an ambient extreme.
