The second week of ‘proggy rock’ on Gulls Window Circus. Only three USA artists this week [Holding Pattern, Moondog, Ram], so you get to travel around the world with the circus, enjoying prog sounds by bands typically associated with rock (Nektar and The Alan Parsons Project aside). Just as BOC gave us a prog-like moment on the Bad Channels soundtrack last week, Jimmy Page will make you say ‘wow’ on his Death Wish II soundtrack. Make sure to hear Connecticut’s Holding Pattern and Long Island’s Ram as well.

The first of the three week ‘proggy rock’ series on Gulls Window Circus, where we hear (mostly) 70s rock bands exercising their right to go prog on certain tracks. The Netherlands bring George Baker Selection and Focus, Australia brings Cybotron, Belfast brings Fruupp, Lisbon brings Gala Drop, Paris brings Gong, Germany brings Faust, Cardiff brings Budgie, plus we have lots of English and US bands as well.

The second week of ‘outside of rock’ (electronic) on Gulls Window Circus. After enjoying last week’s sounds, the tracks in this show came to mind and they configured themselves almost on their own. Some of the artists are quite new [Liminal, Vermelho Wonder, Jura Soundsystem, Harri Pierson], Obscure Desire are not new but are re-discovered on a label I love, and some are 10 years or older and just plain worth surfacing again [Jonny Teardrop, Lnrdcroy, Rouge Mécanique, Linkwood, 6th Borough Project, Matmos, Squarepusher, Mushrooms Project].

An ‘outside of rock’ (electronic) Gulls Window Circus show that seeks to penetrate your mind as you absorb subtle shifts in these (sometimes) long tracks. I find myself listening tracks like Theo Parrish or Brian Eno, Holger Czukay, J. Peter Schwalm thinking it is just repetition, than realizing I am in a different place than I started and am bopping to the track. Many of the tracks are not so subtle or profound – they are just solid tracks that work together to propel you to a semi-relaxed mode. I know this sounds like a bunch of contradictions, but give me your trust and sail beside me for these 2 hours.

Today is a CD spinnin’ show on Gulls Window Circus, and also an exploration into the Canadian label The Beautiful Music, accompanied by many fellow travelers in the world of indie rock, power pop, post-punk and art rock. Aside from the joys of The Beautiful Music bands, many of which do well-chosen covers, we have a track from the most recent Saint Etienne fanclub CD, an Empire track (a Sly cover) from a CD put together by Bob Andrews of the band, my Newcastle faves Pale Man Made, and a collaboration between The Dainties Martin Stephenson & The Only Ones John Perry.
