An electronic Carl’s living room (vinyl LP tracks played on a real turntable) starts with a Polish artist from the soundtrack to the film Tonight She Comes, moves to Lucrecia Dalt (who I experienced recently at Unsound in Poland and loved), soon moves into African tracks re-edited by several different artists, then goes into Indonesia with Wahono, takes a quick 5 track dip into original underground disco/re-edits, and ends with 2 Ukrainian artists before ending for-real with the appropriately titled ‘Ending’ from the soundtrack to Peter Fonda’s 1971 film The Hired Hand.

Wasn’t exactly what to call this show, so it is tagged as Carl’s living room, international, soul/funk, soundtrack, and electronic. Qualifying as ‘international’ would be Giuliano Sorgini , Trio Balkana and Anni-Frid Lyngstad , ‘soul/funk’ would be Esther Marrow, Curtis Mayfield, Home Boy And The C.O.L., The Prolifics, and Slave, ‘soundtrack’ would be Nico Fidenco and Tangerine Dream, ‘electronic’ would be DYYU∩E, Loveshadow, and MLO & Spacetime Continuum, and Alex Ho. That leaves Miriam Makeba with a Buffalo Springfield cover, Les Baxter And His Orchestra with classic exotica, Smith & Mudd with a contemporary tribute to library music, Scream And Dance with post-punk, and Michael James Pollard, a one-off 7″-only discovery from the 80s.

Carl’s living room means vinyl LP tracks played on a real turntable in real time. A well put together rock show awaits you. With lots of unusual pairings that work well. Ed Gein’s Car paired with Jefferson Airplane? Yup. Christie McVie paired with Dream Syndicate? Yes again – many such pairings (my faves include Wire w/Tad, Dictators w/Pandora). You get a double dose of Bob Mould, with him even sounding like Psychedelic Furs on one of them. The show ends with an unknown 1979 7″ out of Maine (The Bumstead’s) sent by a Gulls Window Circus listener.

Today we spend some time in Africa [Rob, William Onyeabor, Orchestre Massako, Rim And Kasa], and with artists from other countries that have strong connections to Africa [Plunky And Oneness Of Juju, Gaston, Tony Allen], then Northern Ireland [Andwella], France [David Keaton], UK [Róisín Murphy] and finally a bunch of USA artists [Orange Krush, Quincy Jones, Yvonne Fair, Bobbi Humphrey, Sly & The Family Stone, Fay Hill, Reanna Coleman]. A soul/funk delight. Every time I listen to these, its like discovering them again – William Onyeabor, Tony Allen, Bobbi Humphrey, Fay, Devil In The Flesh soundtrack, Rim And Kasa, and Reanna Coleman tracks.

Vinyl LP tracks rock show. NYC bands Steel Tips and Band Of Outsiders, Australians Tropical F*ck Storm, New Zealander Robert, West Coast artists Chuck Prophet, Love, Alan Munson, The Dream Syndicate, L7 and Melvins are all featured alongside a bunch of UK artists. The first 6 songs seem inseparable to me – just listen as a chunk. Herman Brood as always is a joy. I love the bass part in the Alan Munson track. That Kinks track – wow. New Dream Syndicate shows them still striving, as are new Steve Diggle-led Buzzcocks. Melvins from their 4xLP acoustic record (!).

Today’s show is all vinyl LP and 12″ single tracks played on a real turntable in real time. Experimental/electronic sounds start the show with 33.10.3402, then we travel to prog-influenced cinematic tracks, instrumental funk, Italian soundtracks, then spend the rest of the show doing vector searches to the outer limits of musics new and old, suggested by the core focus of the show. Carl’s living room series in an electronic show that covers several eras and locales. All vinyl played in real time. Several tracks from the early 00’s (AIR, Zoot Woman, Yoko Mono, Rick Wade) mix with current re-edits (A.L-T., Loose Joints, Dionne Warwick, Marc Roberts), re-discoveries from the past (Angel’o, Carol Williams, Saâda Bonaire, Monoton, Ultravox, Ambient Warrior), and finally a brand new track from A Certain Ratio.
